Dorian Wood is a great artist. We discovered him thanks to General Bye Bye who proposed him for the february Selection. He answers kindly few questions. You might wonder reading the interview “he is 100% serious or he is kidding or what” ? Is-it so important to know ? What is for sure is that he will tour in europe in may. Come and check how serious he is on stage !

Who is Dorian Wood ?

There is actually another Dorian Wood who is a lovely musician and artist in Birmingham, UK. He’s one of my best friends. I’m sure there are other Dorian Woods in this world, but he and I are the only ones who matter.

What are your plans for 2010 ?

I plan to cry in public more often, and if there is a microphone anywhere near me, even better.

Most of the Net Emergence jurors have been seduced at first listening by your songs. Does-it happen all the time ?

No.

Hell of a video. where does it come from ?

The "Pianos and Bricks" video was directed by my dear friend, the artist Dino Dinco. We have been friends for many years, and this marked our first collaboration. We met for beers to work on the concept of the video, and we talked a lot about pornography, sex clubs and Frances Bacon. And that’s where the video came from!

Why a Peter Seeger’s song cover ?

Are you referring to "Little Boxes"? It was originally composed and performed by Malvina Reynolds, who was a close friend of Pete Seeger. She was 55 at the time, and she wrote many, many songs about social issues. She is a huge inspiration, and Pete Seeger is a thief.

Black Pig Suite and bolka are available for free on bandcamp in streaming. Can you tell us why ?

Hmm. I don’t know.

Entering digital era, do you think CDs are still relevant ?

Yes. I’ve learned this the hard way. "Black Pig Suite" was originally intended to be a download-only release. However, many people have come up to me at shows asking for a CD version. So I made a limited run on CD. But lots of people are fine with digital. I don’t know. I’d rather just sing into someone’s ear and have them pay me for it.

What is wrong with music (industry) today ?

Nothing wrong at all.

An artist or a band you would love make a duet with ?

Yma Sumac. Good thing I’m patient!

The most beautiful music story that you would like to share with us ?

This is a tough question. I’ve been very fortunate to have many nice music moments. I do remember a very sweet moment in New York, almost 2 years ago. I was playing music with the experimental orchestra Killsonic (killsonic.org) in Central Park. The sun was going down, people were dancing and cheering…it was great. After our set, a young woman came up to us, very drunk, thanking us for the music. She explained that the magazine she worked for had gone bankrupt, and she had lost her job. It was roughly the beginning of the U.S. financial crisis. She said she had been getting drunk all afternoon, and that our music lifted her spirits. I hugged her very tightly. She smelled nice.

Any webcam/video message you would like to send us ?

I can perhaps send one in a week’s time…….?
