Difficile à dire, je pense que c’est le morceau qui décide du duo. Ce n’est pas forcément vers une artiste pop que j’irais. J’aimerais beaucoup trouver des résonances avec une chanteuse traditionnelle indienne ou bulgare par exemple.

Eva Marton dans Elektra de Richard Strauss à l’Opéra Bastille en 1992. Mes jambes ne me soutenaient plus en sortant de la représentation. J’ai été dévorée toute crue par la musique et par son interprétation. Une délicieuse violence.

Rarement le choix aura été aussi compliqué et les débats aussi animés. Un peu normal puisqu’il y avait 30 groupes dans la sélection de mars. Près de 100 mails plus tard, Lidwine est l’artiste du mois de mars.

Lidwine

Pour ne pas faire comme tout le monde, je ne vais citer aucune influence de Lidwine. Mais il y en a une qui est prégnante, qu’on ne peut pas ne pas remarquer. Et la question s’est donc posée : influence ou clonage ?

Quelques jurés répondent :

“Univers cohérent et personnel (entre xxx évidemment et Kate Bush), suffisamment inédit en France pour être salué. Belle voix, travail visuel sur les clips. Ca vaut d’être ma lauréate.”

Certains seront d’accord avec nos jurés et d’autres crierons peut-être à l’imposture. Tant mieux. L’important c’est que ceux qui aiment s’y retrouvent.

100 copies only, out now on Hands In The Dark. The first physical release by Death And Vanilla and we’re very proud of it. The music is influenced by old soundtracks, psychedelia, library music, kraut.

Ghost in the machine is seen as a radio hit.

We’ve never thought that our songs would be played on the radio, or as radio hits. But Ghosts In The Machine is the song we’ve have got the most feedback for, so if any, that would be the one.

A new ep will hopefully be ready in spring, with live shows to follow.

Internet for an artist today ?

Internet have made it possible for smaller bands/artist/labels to reach listeners around the world, and you don’t have to go through a major label which feels so good.

Any thoughts about piracy ?

It turned the music industry upside down, which is a good thing in the long term. It is understandable that if you invested money in releasing a record, you would want to get your money back. Personally we don’t mind paying for music that we like. But in the end, if someone downloads your songs, it really just means that that person probably likes your music.

The most difficult for an artist in 2010 ?

That people get bored quite easily, because the lifespan for everything seems much shorter these days.

The most rewarding ?

That people all over the world can find your music without it being released by a major label. And all the dedication that we feel is out there. People just don’t consume music at home anymore, they blog about it, make podcasts and share it to other people. It is no big difference to the good old mix tape on cassette, but it really reaches out on a whole new level.

One artist or band for a collaboration ?

Noone.

Most beautiful story that happened to you ?

The most beautiful thing that happened to Death And Vanillas music recently would have to be the Vibraphonette.

Dorian Wood  en tournée européenne

C’est pas une tournée des stades. C’est une tournée montée à l’arrache pour faire découvrir sa musique au-delà de New-York et des états-unis. Pour découvrir Dorian Wood c’est simple il y a tous les articles écrits sur lui par les participants à Net Emergence ou l’article du mois. Tom Waits, REM, the Antony and The Johnsons pour les références…

Il passera par la France du 7 au 11 mai:

• Le 7 mai au Baloard à Montpellier
• Le 8 mai à la comète 347 à Paris
• et Le 11 mai à la compagnie générale (ancien espace B) toujours sur Paris.
  Si vous êtes sur Barcelone, Berlin, Londres ou Stockholm ça marche aussi. Du 6 au 18 mai, Dorian Wood passera pas l’une de ces villes.

Viva & The Diva en concert au Bus Palladium le 15 mai

Groupe du mois de janvier. Energie brute et chanteuse hypnotique. Ils seront en concert le 15 mai au Bus Palladium. Leur précédent passage à la villette sonic avait fait grosse impression. Alors ne vous privez pas. Et en plus c’est gratuit !

Phillious Williams, Artist of the month on Net Emergence. We are trying to understand who is Phillious William. Not so easy. But for sure the man got stories to tell. True or not ? Is-it that important…

Who is Phillious Williams ?

Phillious Williams is maybe a real person or maybe my grandfather was just a good story teller. The tale came down from him. My Grandfather’s Grandfather, or maybe his Great Grandfather, ( ARE YOU STILL HERE ?) He is not here to ask how many greats, He has gone from this world.

Anyway, this Grandfathers Grandfather He sailed on a clipper ship…’The Cuttysark’ many years ago, His name can be found on the logbook, so I know this part is true.

So apparently there was this very old book that was passed around the ship, It had been handed down by many over the years, a collection of memoirs, songs and poems, it was all written by someone called ‘Phillious Williams’. The stories were often read aloud in the evening down below as not everyone could read so good , if at all!

The stories were witty, gripping and outrageous and supposed to be ‘Phillious Williams’s’ true adventures, the story of his crazy, dark messed up life.

So this relative of my Grandfather came back and found huge pleasure in re-telling what he could remember of these tales etc, and so the stories were passed down Father to son, until they eventually hit my ears when I was a small boy, ( By small I mean, just average for a child, I am not a circus dwarf and was not a ewok in starwars).

All I really remember was he gambled things that were not his to gamble, travelled a lot, drank constantly, got in heaps of trouble with women and it all made me laugh and cringe. I wish I could remember the stories well, but I was like 7 or 8, but I always remembered the name, hence, I took it and since I have no son it’ll probably die with me.

You were born in the 17th century during the bubonic plague… What keeps you busy after all these years ?

I was not born in 17th I am from 1886 and my real name is Eli Williams.

What’s the story of « Sweet Debris » ?

I can’t talk about it, real sorry.

Where can we find your previous EP « The London Beach »

Hmmm…I was gonna say you can’t find one, but I saw one on ebay just two weeks back and you know whats weirder than that ….it was in France…no shit I kid you not. There was only 500 done, I was gonna buy it cause I don’t have one, but then I thought thats one more person who won’t hear it, so I didn’t, I bought this movie called ‘one eye’d jacks’ with Marlon Brando and it was cool as anything I’d seen in ages.

What are the plans for 2010 and onwards ?

2010 … well it’s gotta be better than 2009, 08 and 07 huh.

I broke my back not long after the London Beach ep. I was a year or so in bed waiting for an operation, had the operation and then like another 6 months in bed getting used to the metal bar they put in my back! When I did eventually get up take a shower an breakfast and go out …I found walking and just day to day living tough. Also I had to kick the 17 pain pills a day I’d been on for 3 years, so last few years been hard,  it can only get better. But the good side was I wrote 200 songs in 2007-08 and also a 160.000 word fiction book ‘The life loves and trials of a cactus climber’ . Its a heavy western love story about a kid who has to climb cacti, ha ha but I guess the title says just that huh? Anyway it’s sad, pretty dark and very beautiful and I’m so happy I bust my back, just to have had the time and patience to have laid down this tale. I done 100 illustrations to go with it and also wrote 40 songs… one per chapter. The idea being you get a big book with drawings and a download for the music , I guess its a musical, if it was a film it’d be a musical, but not like one of them awful one’s where everyone bursts into song every 5 minutes., I mean I hate that when someone say’s « Would you like a cake Katie »? and then Katie hoist’s up her patchwork skirt, starts dancing around the room jumping off chairs , swinging from lights singing at the top of her voice « Yes Mary I’d love a cake , a great big fancy flowery cake, I’d take that cake , the cake you baked, and cram it in my silly face , for the cakes you make , make no mistake are the greatest bloody cakes to date! »……etc etc …  No no no…

When someone sings in my book, its for a good reason, i.e, they are on stage, or in a rocking chair on the front porch making entertainment instead of climbing a cactus, spying on the whore next door, doing opium or having sex.

So hang on what was the question? Oh 2010 , I’m in the studio at the moment recording new stuff, so an ep this year, you know I can walk, jump and everything now so lots more gigs, I’m playing a couple acoustic shows in Brooklyn next month so hopefully this is the start of just getting out and about more. It really feels good to be myself again. I have a great backing band now, double bass drums and lapsteel and it’s more like kinda how I see it…, Phillious Williams has always been just two : Myself and Matt Lord, but Matt has been busy touring with Esser and previously to that Ladyfuzz, and then like I say I done my back in , so I kinda played lots acoustic shows and sometimes just me and a drummer…

Matt is moving to L.A pretty soon and we will always play together when he is around or I’m there , but for now…

I’ve put together this four piece , and it’s really sounding good, I’m excited about this year.

And I’m gonna get the book out and make everyone cry!!!

You made reference to western. We often thought to a mix between Sergio Leone’s universe and the night of the hunter. Are we crazy or you meant it ?

I love every western movie ever made, I must have like 4 or 500 and seen em all loads of times.I have loved em since I was like 3 or 4 years old!

I was not allowed to see fistful of dollars when I was a kid , so I stole it from the book store and kept it under my bed for ages, read it bout 5 times before I got my hands on the movie and then, when I saw it the 1st time , I knew then and there, I only ever wanted to be an actor or rob banks or write slow ballads for people on worn out horses.

I also LOVE ‘the night of the hunter’ that is so cool you referred to that! it really does it for me!

Yeah I’m kinda halfway between the lot really, I kinda do wear old suits and western tie’s, I have a shotgun, I have an old harley instead of a horse cause its faster and shits less,… I have not started robbing banks yet, but anything can happen!

I still wanna be an actor but hate cameras and being told what to do.

We also mentionned ghost, haunted soul. Who’s on that picture for example?

Oh thats me , like I said I hate camera’s so I took an invisible pill….next time I’ll take two.

what comes to your mind looking at this video ?

I’ve never seen it and am not looking now….haha! oh man, that suit! We were on the way back from a gig in wales, and late for the studio where they were gonna film us, I didn’t have a suit or time to go home and fetch one, so I went into the nearest charity store and came out in a green safari suit, I think i was still hung over from the night before, so I threw it on!

I only wear black or dark coloured suits now-day’s and always make sure they fit snug. But thats life huh, I don’t put this footage stuff up and if I could take it all of… I would.

Internet has changed a lot of thing regarding music since youre beginning: for worse or better ?

Internet does as much harm as good, like in everything not just music!

I don’t think I like internet at all, but it’s here and here to stay.

It’s Worse, but like , you still take it huh, I mean I’m emailing this to you, I’m on line,  it’s like a drug, you can run it down, get sick of it, say never again, you’ll still go back….  it’s got you by the balls and nothing you can do bout it.

One artist or band you’re dreaming to play with ?

Really can’t think of anyone I’d like to play with who is still alive, but when I die, I’m gonna ask to jam with Edith Piaf …without ‘hymn to love’ I don’t think I’d be here. She kills me, utterly kills me and I adore it, I love her style.

Most beautiful music story that happened to you ?

I really dunno, you what, I just love singing, writing  performing but I guess when you really know you’ve touched someone, like I’ve wrote some pretty sad songs and some funny dumb ones to … if someone is smiling and ranting how good a tune or gig that they just heard/saw or if some breaks a tear, cause a song just took em some place down memory lane… its all good, any reaction is cool… but mostly … if my little song hits me, then I’m over the moon… I’m selfish I’m always looking to get high of my sadness or maybe its just expressing it, I dunno … can’t answer this question properly. There are 1000s stories I wrote like over 1300 songs, they all mean something to me… but I can only remember 200 at anyone time my brain space is limited … but i have recorded everything… mostly just rough. I once played a gig and played 164 songs with one break, it went on four hours at some folk festival, it was kinda strange , my voice didn’t run dry, the room stayed full all day it went from silent on mellow sad songs to glass throwing dancing on tables on fast ones… up and down…that was probably my best gig, there were a few who saw the whole thing…. like from the opening song to me collapsing in the fireplace at the end and they still go on about ….it was beautiful.

Net Emergence ? Faire émerger et faire découvrir un artiste ou un groupe par mois. Un groupe dont on parle, pendant un mois et dont les émergeurs acceptent de parler également. En bien ou en mal bien sûr.

En Mars ce sera Captain and Me

Difficile de les décrire. Pour faire court et cliché on dirait : des Norvégiens qui jouent de la musique des balkans. Ou de la « Maximalistic epic conceptual balkan country » comme ils disent. C’est un groupe de printemps. Enjoué, vivant et bordélique quand même. Peut-être le groupe le plus accessible depuis le lancement de Net Emergence (sans jugement de valeur).

Des norvégiens influencés par Emir Kusturica, Goran Bregovic mais aussi et c’est plus surprenant Sufjan Stevens,et Calexico ou encore Andrew Bird. Des Norvégiens assez insaisissables qui évoluent en grande formation sur scène : entre le saxophone, la clarinette, la mandoline et la batterie ils sont 7. Assurément à découvrir en live. D’ailleurs dès qu’il passeront en France, on vous en reparlera. En attendant voici le clip de happy new year:

Dorian Wood est surprenant. Dorian Wood est déroutant. Sa musique qui oscille entre fête et tristesse est déroutante. Son univers est troublant. Mais Dorian Wood est attachant et sympathique. Il gagne à être connu. Et en attendant sa tournée française de mai 2010, il répond à quelques questions de Net Emergence.

Qui est Dorian Wood ?

Il y a en fait un autre Dorian Wood, un musicien et artiste adorable qui vit à Birmingham en Angleterre. C’est un de mes meilleurs amis. Je suis sûr qu’il y a plein d’autres Dorian Wood, mais lui et moi sommes les seuls qui vaillent la peine. 

Quels plans pour 2010 ?

J’ai prévu de pleurer plus souvent en public, et s’il y a un micro près de moi alors ce sera encore mieux. 

La plupart des jurés ont été séduits à la première écoute. Ca vous arrive toujours ?

Non.

D’où vient cette video incroyable ?

La vidéo "Pianos and Bricks" a été réalisée par mon bon ami, l’artiste Dino Dinco. Nous sommes amis depuis des années, et cette vidéo est notre première collaboration. Nous nous sommes vus autour d’une bière pour parler de la vidéo, et nous avons beaucoup discuté de pornographie, de clubs échangistes et de Francis Bacon. La vidéo vient de là !

Pourquoi une reprise de Peter Seeger ?

Tu veux parler de “Little Boxes” ? Elle a été composée et jouée par Malvina Reynolds, qui était une amie proche de Peter Seeger. Elle avait 55 ans à cette époque, et elle a écrit beaucoup, beaucoup de chansons sur les revendications et les problèmes sociaux. Elle est une source d’inspiration énorme, et Peter Seeger est un voleur.

Black Pig Suite et bolka sont disponibles gratuitement en streaming sur Bandcamp ? pourquoi ?

Je ne sais pas.

Le CD est-il toujours pertinent à l’ère digital ?

Oui. Et je l’ai appris à la dur. "Black Pig Suite" devait sortir en download uniquement. Cependant, plein de gens sont venus aux concerts en demandant une version CD. Alors j’ai fait une version limitée en CD. Mais en même temps beaucoup de personnes trouvent très bien de n’avoir que le download. Je ne sais pas. Je devrais juste chanter dans les oreilles de quelqu’un et lui demander de me payer pour ça.

Qu’est ce qui ne va pas avec la musique (ou son industrie) aujourd’hui ?

Tout va bien.

Un artiste avec qui vous aimeriez faire un duo ?

Yma Sumac. Heureusement que je suis patient !  [NdNE Yma Sumac est décédée en 2008]

La plus belle aventure musicale que tu voudrais partager avec nous ?

C’est une question difficile. J’ai eu la chance de vivre beaucoup de beaux moments musicaux. Je me souviens d’un très beau moment à New york, il y a bientôt 2 ans. J’étais en train de jouer de la musique avec l’orchestre expérimental Killsonic dans Central Park. Les gens dansaient, s’amusaient au soleil couchant… C’était génial. Après notre show, une jeune femme est venue vers nous, elle était très saoule, et nous a remerciée pour notre musique. Elle nous a expliqué que le magazine pour lequel elle travaillait venait de faire faillite et qu’elle avait perdu son boulot. C’était le début de la crise financière aux US. Elle nous a dit qu’elle avait bu tout l’après-midi et que notre musique l’avait soulagée, emportée. Je l’ai serrée très fort dans mes bras. Elle sentait bon.

Un message video/webcam pour Net Emergence ?

Je vais essayer d’en envoyer la semaine prochaine ….. ?

Peut-être à la semaine prochaine avec une vidéo de Dorian Wood qui sait. En attendant, n’hésitez pas à proposer un groupe pour le mois de mars.

Une sélection de 15 groupes, c’est peu et c’est beaucoup. C’est peu quand on pense aux centaines de milliers de groupes peu connus qui peuplent internet. Et c’est beaucoup lorsque la sélection est de qualité. Et il y avait du beau monde pour janvier. Du beau monde donc mais un groupe s’est assez nettement détaché. Et ce groupe c’est …

Viva & The Diva.

Une batterie tribale, entouré de rythmiques synthétiques, un synthé basse enivrant, des mélodies de claviers et de guitares obsédantes et une voix androgyne, comme arraché par le diable, murmure, envoûte et scande, les mots de ce rock and roll de science fiction. Dixit la bio du groupe. Entre balade synthétique et hip hop métallique, Viva & The Diva ne fait pas dans le consensuel.

Inconnu ?

Mois après mois cela sera un des défis de Net Emergence. Mettre en avant des groupes peu connus, talentueux et dont la démarche s’inscrit dans la philosophie de partage du projet. Est-ce qu’un groupe comme Viva & The Diva dont certains membres jouent dans des groupes connus a besoin de notre aide? Peut-être pas. Ou pas aujourd’hui. Leur démarche? On ne la connaît pas encore. Mais un des but de Net Emergence c’est bien de faire découvrir une musique que vous ne trouverez pas au top 50. De ce point de vue là, est-ce que leur musique mérite d’être découverte? Oui mille fois oui. Alors foncez sur leur myspace (au design aléatoire) ou sur leur page facebook. Accessible mais original. Entrainant mais complexe. Vivant mais torturé. Viva & the Diva s’impose comme une réussite donc le premier album est ici déjà attendu avec impatience.

Et les autres ?

Ce mois-ci il a été dur de départager les groupes et outre Viva & The Diva, 2 autres artistes ont particulièrement retenu notre attention.

Bombadil

Lorsque vous achetez un album de Bombadil, il vous envoie un CD pour le moins personnalisé. Et  ce n’est pas qu’un gadget. Musicalement, ca arrive un peu de tous les côtés (un piano vient dire bonjour, une guitare dit au-revoir pendant que quelques cuivres ne font que passer), tout est monté comme une suite de longues montagnes russes pop. Et surtout c’est efficace. Un univers, un vrai. Avec une touche d’originalité et un grain de folie.

Mathieu Persan

Parce que sa démarche est originale et que ses mélodies ont séduit des membres du jury. Tous les 2000 téléchargements, Mathieu Persan vous offre une chanson. Et ça dure depuis quelques temps. “Je n’ai pas besoin de maison de disque si je vous ai vous” affirme-t-il sur son site. Une telle approche ne pouvait que plaire à Net Emergence. Pas parce qu’on aime pas les maisons de disques, mais bien parce qu’on aime les artistes qui font preuve d’invention et d’originalité.
